Winter bind: ice at the bottom seal
Omaha winters put meltwater at the threshold, then freeze it overnight. The rubber bottom seal can lock to the slab. If the opener is straining and the door is not moving, stop hitting the button. Forcing a frozen door can tear the seal, bend the arm, or burn the motor — and it will not tell you whether a spring is also broken.
What is usually safe to try, if you can do it without standing under a crooked door:
- Look at the bottom seal. If it is glazed to the concrete, that is ice, not a dead opener.
- Clear snow and slush from the path so the door is not closing onto a ridge of ice.
- Gentle heat or a pet-safe melt along the threshold — not a flood of boiling water into the opener, and not rock salt packed against metal tracks.
- If you use the emergency release, stay out from under the door. A door with a broken spring is much heavier than it looks.
If the door is crooked, the cable is off a drum, or the door feels dangerously heavy by hand, that is a spring/hardware problem. Leave it down and request a callback. Do not try to “help” a torsion spring.
Safety reverse — test it; do not assume it
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tells homeowners to test the reverse function: put a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door’s path. The closing door should hit the board and reverse. If it does not, CPSC says to disconnect the opener until it is adjusted, repaired, or replaced. Inspect the door and opener about every 30 days.
Photo-eyes are a second system. They should sit low — CPSC’s publication says 4 to 6 inches above the floor if an electric eye is used — so a small child cannot crawl under the beam. Wave something through the beam while the door is closing. It should reverse without waiting for contact. Dirty or kicked sensors are a common winter failure after snow blowers and slush.
A balanced door, with the opener disconnected, should stay where you leave it in a partly open position. If it slams or rockets up, the springs need a person who works on springs. That is not a DIY YouTube job.
Wind is a load, not a slogan
The garage door is often the largest moving surface on an Omaha house. Plains wind works the tracks, the weatherseal, and any panel that is already loose. After a hard blow, look for a door that no longer sits flush, a seal that has pulled out, or a track that has shifted. We will not invent a wind-rating number or an insurance discount as if it were ours.
Questions worth asking
- Is this ice bind, a failed opener, or a broken spring? Those are three different jobs.
- Did the 2x4 reverse test pass? Did the photo-eyes reverse without contact?

- What parts are worn (rollers, cables, weatherseal) versus what must be replaced as a matched pair (torsion springs)?
